Why train to be a Maths teacher?

Maths is such a vital subject it is imperative that we have knowledgeable and passionate teachers who can teach the next generation to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and to promote the joy of learning maths to all students.

Maths is foundational for many areas of study and everyday life. From enhancing problem-solving skills and managing finances to simple things like telling the time and weighing ingredients, Mathematics is more than just numbers; it is a universal language that shapes our everyday lives. Mathematical knowledge also underpins key concepts in numerous other subjects, including science, economics, music and art.

Being a Maths teacher involves developing creative teaching methods to make the subject engaging and accessible. You can help students learn to think logically, reason mathematically and develop the critical thinking and problem solving skills they need to succeed in life.

How will i2i train you to become a Maths teacher?

Inspire. Engage. Develop

Our comprehensive Maths programme focusses on developing new teachers who have a passion for Maths and a desire to instil an appreciation of the subject in their students.

The programme will prepare you to teach the key themes including algebra, ratio & proportion, geometry and measures, probability and statistics, and approaches to help make lessons accessible to all pupils, no matter their ability.  You will be mentored and taught by highly enthusiastic and experienced Maths teachers, encouraging and supporting you to apply your knowledge and skills to create inspiring and engaging lessons.

In addition to weekly Professional Study Sessions, trainees will have seven Maths Subject Studies days with our experienced Maths Subject Tutor. These will enable you to deepen your understanding of key mathematical concepts across different levels and consider the best ways to teach this content to your students. You will understand the use of physical resources and/or technology in Maths to explore patterns and relationships. For example using software such as Demos, Geogebra or Autograph to work with graphs. We also consider how other qualifications offered in some schools, such as GCSE Statistics and Further Maths, link to the main GCSE specification.

Entry Requirements

Alongside your passion and drive we require the following qualifications:

  • GCSE (or equivalent) Grade C/4 and above in English and Maths
  • A Level Maths is highly desirable
  • Honours degree 2.2 or above in a relevant subject - we do consider trainees who do not have a degree in Maths if you have evidence of strong subject knowledge, experience in a career relating to Maths or a strong Maths A Level.
