What our trainees say

What we are looking for

We are looking for people who share our passion for biology and want to inspire young people to put science at the centre of their learning.

Ideally you will have relevant subject specific qualifications at degree level. For those candidates that share this passion and have the potential to become great teachers, yet do not have subject specific degree qualifications, we will consider suppporting you with a Subject Knowledge Enhancement programme.

What we offer

  • QTS and PGCE (Pedagogy and Practice)

  • QTS only

  • Core training locally facilitated at Weydon School

  • A network of  schools local to you

  • High potential for a career within the partnership

  • Ongoing professional development through our teaching school alliance

  • A network of trainees to collaborate with

  • A flexible, responsive training programme which meets your needs

How our programme works

Training takes place one day per week at Weydon School, which is located in Farnham, Surrey. Training is divided into Professional Studies and Subject Studies. Professional Studies focuses on more general aspects of teaching such as behaviour management, feedback, mastery and differentiation for example whereas Subject Studies considers these issues in the context of your subject and suports you learning to teach the complexities of your particular subject.

For the remaining four days of the week, you will be based in your host school. Here you will begin the term by observing teachers teach a range of classes that you may eventually be  teaching yourself. You will have opportunities to teach small groups within classes, take small episodes within lessons and gradually build towards taking whole lessons and then a series of lessons. By Christmas of the first term you will be teaching around 60% of a Newly Qualified Teacher's timetable. Throughout this time, you will have  mentor within your host school. Your mentor will support and coach you, helping you improve and gain confidence. Each week, you will return to Weydon for the next phase of training and for an opportunity to reflect on progress.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement

Applying for teacher training in biology need not necessarily be held back due to weaknesses in subject knowledge. You may still be able to train to teach (and be eligible for the bursaries they attract) by building up or refreshing your existing knowledge with a subject knowledge enhancement programme.

If you apply to us, we may ask you to take an SKE course if we feel you have the right qualities to become a teacher, but believe you need to complete additional subject training first. If that’s the case, we will offer you a place conditional on doing an SKE course. For more information, visit our SKE page.

What our trainees say

What were your considerations when choosing a teacher training provider?

The lead school’s professional reputation, how many other school’s were included in its partnership, and whether it provided a place for my chosen subject.

How did the Weydon Programme match your needs?

Rather than undertaking a traditional PGCE I was looking for a programme where the majority of the training was school-based. I wanted to immerse myself in a school environment and spend most of the training year in that one school; helping me to develop relationships with students and staff, and an understanding of that particular school’s practices and routines.

How supported did you feel during the lead up to application and the application process?

Regular contact from the course administrator was both informative and reassuring and made me feel welcomed as an applicant.

What would you recommend about the programme?

The support from the staff that run the training has been very comforting, similarly having a strong one-to-one relationship with my in-school mentor has been a massive help, knowing that he is there to guide me along my training. As well as having regular contact with other trainees, to be able to share experiences with them.
